Preparing for academic careers

Graduation paradeSemester one course

Preparing for Academic Careers is a programme for doctoral candidates who are considering or intending to pursue an academic career.

A 10-week course, held in the first semester of each year, covers the nature of academic work, understanding learning, planning for teaching and first teaching experiences, developing a research profile, publishing, managing workload, and career planning.

Entry to the course is by application and participants will be selected on the basis of academic merit (including experience in teaching, research such as publications and conference presentations, and any other academic leadership or contributions). All participants must have completed the provisional enrolment period of their PhD and have a supervisor’s support.

For more information, or to apply, contact SLC reception.

Semester two workshop

During semester two, we offer an open workshop with a panel of staff to discuss becoming and being an academic.
