|Workshop Name||Intercultural Communication: Session 1 - Knowing me and knowing you (a-ha!)|
|About Workshop||We are increasingly dealing with people from different cultures and with different worldviews. At times, we may be surprised by an unexpected response or approach when communicating with others. In this workshop, we will develop our ability to recognise and manage misunderstandings that can arise in intercultural encounters. We will expand our awareness of worldviews—and reflect on our own—and, with the help of a model of intercultural sensitivity, we’ll identify how an individual’s perspective might influence their approach to intercultural interactions.
Session 1 focuses on foundational understanding intercultural communication. It can be attended as a stand-alone workshop, or as part of the pair workshops that together will develop a greater depth of understanding of how to communicate effectively across cultures.
Jo Oranje has a PhD in intercultural communicative language teaching. She is based in the Division of Health Sciences, supporting international students and the staff who work with them. Antonie Alm is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Languages and Cultures. She has a research interest in intercultural communication and teachers GLBL101 ‘Introduction to Intercultural Communication’.
